2018’s Silver Lining
Instead of reflecting on the year, this trend will have you reflecting in it. No, seriously. You know we’re suckers for unicorn-inspired pigments, and we can’t ignore the way grey took the world by storm these last few years – in almost fifty shades… #sorrynotsorry.
But this year, we’re combining the two classics to get the best of both worlds. The vibrancy of rainbow locks and cool-girl grey vibes are giving us a more polished option for 2018.
That’s right, metallics are back and more striking than ever. First it was shimmery pastels in 2015, then classic rose gold in 2017. Now, we’re going for glossy shades of silver and gold to give us our glam metal fix.
With Kardashian-level highlights on cheeks, collar bones and even ears, we’re not surprised that people want out-of-this-world shine for their hair too. Ironically, this gleam can be exactly what makes the looks so wearable. By taking down the contrast on highly saturated colors and replacing it with high intensity shine, a metallic hue can create a chic, timeless look.
But, that doesn’t mean we have to lose the “wow” factor of colored hair (like we’d ever settle for “wearable”). Much like our favorite LBD – or any piece in our all-black wardrobes – this super versatile trend can be dressed up and down. Pack the same punch as a spectrum of colors by adding hints of pink or purple to a silver base.
L’Oreal’s Metals by Majirel is one options for adding that extra dose of color for your client. The collection includes five shades, from Silver Star to Pink Ash, all of which balance reflects and base to achieve maximum sheen. For another variation on this emerging style, they suggest pairing dark metallic roots with softer gradients of color in a smudged melt.
Jack Howard, a London-based colorist and educator who helped develop the collection, told Refinery29 that although the trend can be attributed to recent runway looks, metallics work for all hair types, textures and ages. Let your grandma know she’s not the only one that can rock this look anymore!
Our clients are far from shaking their head-turning color habits (they can’t help it that we make them look so good). But now, they want to get attention in a slightly more subtle way. No more neons or pastels. Instead, prepare to be all about the sheen and dish out glossy finishes in more muted shades. Plus, check out #SilverHair on IG for a *glimmer* of inspiration.
